26918 ◆ SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) ◆ 남아시아지역협력연합 [SAARC : South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation] 인도, 파키스탄, 네팔, 몰디브, 부탄, 스리랑카, 방글라데시 등 남아시아 7개국이 빈곤해소와 경제협력 확대, 평화 관계 구축 등을 위해 1985년 결성한 기구. 1981년 4월 콜롬보에서 열린 외무부장관 회담에서 남아시아협력기구를 만들자는 의견이 나왔고 1983년 8월, 다시 뉴델리에서 만나 SARC(South Asian Regional Cooperation:남아시아지역협력기구)를 만들고 농업, 지역발전, 통신, 기상, 건강과 인구 등 5개 분야에 걸친 협력을 약속했다. 1985년 11월 7일 다카(Dhaka)에서 방글라데시·부탄·인도·몰디브·네팔·파키스탄·스리랑카 등 7개국 정상들이 모여 SAARC(South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation:남아시아지역협력연합)을 발족했다. 조직에는 최고기관인 정상회담, 외무부장관들이 1년에 2회 만나 정책을 결정하고 새로운 프로젝트를 구상하는 장관회의, 외무부차관들이 역시 1년에 2회 모임을 열어 협력 프로그램을 감독하는 상설위원회, 기타 분야별 기술위원회와 사무국, 지역학회 등이 있다. 정상회담은 1985년 다카, 1986년 뱅골라, 1987년 카트만두 등에서 열렸으며 1999년에는 네팔, 2000년에는 파키스탄에서 개최했다. 목적은 남아시아 지역 주민들의 삶의 질을 향상시키고 복지를 증진하며 경제·사회적 성장을 돕는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 개발도상국간의 협력 강화로 지역 문화를 발전시키고 국제적 문제에 공동으로 대처한다. 1989년 마약 퇴치의 해, 1992년 환경의 해, 1994년 청소년의 해 등 해마다 중심 사업을 선정해 활동한다.
