Today marks the anniversary of Lee Bong-chang's (August 10, 1901 – October 10, 1932) detonated a bomb near Sakuradamun Gate in Tokyo, Japan, with the support of Kim Gu, the late founder of the Korean Empire.

The grenade exploded, injuring the horse and overturning the Imperial Household Minister's carriage, but Hirohito was unharmed, marking the failure of the uprising.

However, Lee Bong-chang's deed, in the heart of Tokyo, the center of Japanese colonial rule, served as a catalyst for the world to witness the Korean people's will for independence and their continued resistance.

Furthermore, it energized the independence movement, including the Provisional Government.

In recognition of his distinguished service, the government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Presidential Medal in 1962.

오늘은 이봉창 의사(1901.8.10.~1932.10.10.)가 백범 김구 선생의 지원 아래, 일본 도쿄 사쿠라다문 인근에서 히로히토 일왕을 향해 폭탄을 투척한 날입니다.

수류탄은 폭발하여 말이 다치고 궁내대신의 마차가 뒤집어졌으나, 히로히토는 다치지 않아 거사는 실패로 돌아갔습니다.

그러나 이봉창 의사의 의거는 일제의 심장부인 도쿄 한복판에서 일제가 신격화한 일왕을 향해 폭탄을 투척했다는 점에서 우리 민족의 독립 의지와 지속적인 저항성을 전 세계에 알리는 계기가 됐습니다.

또한, 임시정부를 비롯한 독립운동전선에 새로운 활력소로 작용하였습니다.

정부는 선생의 공훈을 기려 1962년 건국훈장 대통령장을 추서했습니다.
