Around 8:00 p.m. on January 12, 1923, Dr. Kim Sang-ok (January 5, 1889 – January 22, 1923) threw a bomb toward the west window of the Jongno Police Station (near the current Jangan Building).

The bomb hit the window and exploded, and the deafening roar was like a roar awakening the national spirit oppressed by Japanese oppression.

After the deed, Dr. Kim Sang-ok went into hiding from the Japanese police and planned to assassinate Governor-General Makoto Saito. However, his hideout was discovered after a tip-off.

Dr. Kim, who claimed to hit nine out of ten shots, resisted to the end, engaging in repeated gunfights and pursuits with hundreds of Japanese police.

On January 22nd, Dr. Kim Sang-ok, armed with both pistols and jumping from rooftop to rooftop, engaged in a fierce three-hour battle. After running out of ammunition, he committed suicide with his last remaining bullet.

In recognition of his distinguished service, the government posthumously awarded Dr. Kim Sang-ok the Presidential Medal of the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1962.

1923년 1월 12일 밤 8시경, 김상옥 의사(1889.01.05. ~ 1923.01.22.)는 종로경찰서(현 장안빌딩 근처) 서편 창문을 향해 폭탄을 투척했습니다.

폭탄은 창문에 적중해 폭발했고, 그 굉음은 마치 일제의 탄압에 억눌린 민족혼을 일깨우는 우렁찬 함성과도 같았습니다.

의거 이후 일경을 피해 은신한 김상옥 의사는 사이토 마코토 총독 저격을 계획하던 중, 밀고로 인해 은신처가 발각되었습니다.

열에 아홉 발을 명중시킨다는 김 의사는 수백 명의 일본 경찰과 총격전과 추격을 반복하며 끝까지 항거했습니다.

1월 22일, 양손에 권총을 들고 가옥의 지붕을 넘나들며 신출귀몰한 접전을 벌인 김상옥 의사는 3시간에 걸친 치열한 전투 끝에 탄환이 모두 소진되자, 마지막 남은 탄환으로 자결 순국했습니다.

정부는 김상옥 의사의 공훈을 기리어 1962년 건국훈장 대통령장을 추서했습니다.
