It was funded by the U.S. government through the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) Africa Malaria Task Force (AMTF). The first of its kind laboratory will support the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Health malaria control programs with mosquito surveillance, directing insecticide applications, insecticides resistance monitoring, and mapping of potential disease-causing mosquitoes. The lab will also be a regional entomology hub in West Africa for other AMTF partners to benefit from in the future. Mr. Kong in his solidarity message said, “action is required now against the lack of access to clean WASH facilities in safe girl-friendly schools. More action is required now against high rate of anaemia and the inadequate preparation of girls for menarche or first menses that are all contributing to the low learning performance outcomes recorded in Ghana”. The event was in partnership with the UNICEF, KOICA, the Global Affairs Canada and supported by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection as well as the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.The Ghana Education Service (GES) used the day to launch a menstrual hygiene guideline to improve the delivery of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in schools. The guideline is to help stakeholders at all levels to implement actions for effective MHM programming and also provide an appropriate environment for girls through improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure and services. The LEAN Project has an overaching aim of addressing three structural barriers that have historically hindered efforts by government, civil society organisations and the private sector to halt land degradation and deforestation through the uptake of landscape approaches.The LEAN Project will be carried out in five Regions, Western, Savannah, Upper East, Ashanti and Bono East Regions. MoFA targets 2 million farmers for 2021 PFJ The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) is rolling about two million farmers onto the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme for the 2021 farming season. Presently, 1.7 million farmers have been registered under the programme in Ghana. The increment is to drive farmer participation to boost general agricultural production in Ghana. The ministry intends to improve maize production to 3.2 million Metric Tonnes (MT) in 2021 from the 1.8 million MT produced at the commencement of the intervention in 2017.The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto mentioned that,the PFJ has five modules, each of them with different gestation periods and has been very successful. The various modules under the programme are the staple crop, generally referred to as the Planting for Food and Jobs, the Rearing for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), the Greenhouse Village for Vegetables and Mechanisation, which covers simple to huge farm implements.The PERD programme is helping Ghana to diversify and reduce over-reliance on cocoa with seven selected crops including coconut, oil palm, rubber, mango, coffee, cashew and shea.Tree crops are expected to earn about $2.5 billion in the next eight years. Ghana to receive 150 American Peace Corps in September Ghana will receive 150 American Peace Corps volunteers in September this year. This was disclosed by the United States (US) Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie Sullivan. The volunteers are expected to support the nation’s development and transformation agenda. Peace Corps volunteers when disptached will focus on teaching and development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).Ghana is the first country in the world to receive American Peace Corps Volunteers in 1961. The American Government through USAID is implementing project in Ghana's educational sector which include Early Grade Reading for pupils in Basic Schools which targeted more than 250,000 pupils and the Ghana Learning Radio programme. Ms. Sullivan pledged US government’s Committment to partner the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service and all other agencies to help improve lives of the people in the country.
