Hanwha Aerospace, formerly known as Hanwha Defense, signed a contract with Seoul’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration in December 2022 to mass-produce the 120mm Self-Propelled Mortar (SPM) systems and fire command vehicles for the Republic of Korean Army. The contract followed successful field tests and evaluations of the 120mm SPM for months. Nicknamed “Skyfall,” the 120mm tracked mortar system has a strike range 2.3 times greater and firepower 1.9 times longer, compared to the older 4.2-inch mortar. The mortar itself can rotate 360 degrees without rotating the vehicle to respond to target changes. The command vehicle can automatically calculate the shooting data, which helps increase the accuracy and fire support of the vehicle.
