WELCOME TO PATTAYA From a sleepy small village to a thriving beach re sort that never rests on sundown, Pattaya still holds the allure that keep people flocking to its shores. With its expansive beachline and facilities for shore and sea activities, Pattaya is still the most popular beach resort in Thailand. During the day, the resort offers a gamut of activi ties unsurpassed by leisure grounds elsewhere in the country. By night, of course, it is a legend. The city under goes a big transformation where the air is filled with raucous laughter and merriment in discos, go-go establishments. The aroma of mouth-watering dishes and concoctions become more as a wide range of restaurants and food stalls seduce the palate of passersby Neon lights add more dazzle to the growing carnival atmosphere. The fun begins as Pattaya unveils its colorful night face. Then, everything unfolds opening your senses and you begin to understand why it was called the "Queen of Asia's resorts." A bit of its history In 1767, three months before Ayutthaya was besieged by the Burmese. Phraya Tak- or King Thaksin-realized that if the people went into battle without valor, the Kingdom would capitulate. This prompted him to escape with 500 men from the Phichai Monastery Fortress and head to southwest. He resisted the enemy on four occasions, and when the foes finally with drew, he proceeded to Chonburi Province. Phraya tak later took refuge in Thapya District from where the name "Pat tha-yha" was derived. For years, the place was simply a footno in ancient Thai history. Then in April 1961. about 100 American soldiers arrived in Pattaya to rent a few houses by the beach. Their headquarters were in Korat. During the height of the Vietnam war, a steady arrival of American forces took place and Pattaya became their rest and recreation center. That provided Pat taya its first impetus for growth. Today, hardly a trace is left of the old Pattaya. Fishing is no longer the principal money-earner. The city has become a cosmopolitan place and whether its over exuber ant growth has done the city good or harm, is a subject of never-ending discussions. Yet, the fact remains that people keep heading to Pattaya for rest, and especially, for recreation.
