In a groundbreaking blend of transportation and sustainability, Swiss startup Sun-Ways has unveiled the world’s first removable solar panel system designed for installation between active railway tracks.
The pilot project, launched in the village of Buttes in Neuchâtel, uses a custom-built machine—modeled after railway maintenance equipment—to seamlessly place solar panels between the rails without interrupting train operations. These panels are built to be both efficient and durable, with the added advantage of being easily removable for maintenance or seasonal adjustments.
If implemented across Switzerland’s 5,000 kilometers of railway, this innovation could turn vast lengths of unused track space into a massive solar energy grid, delivering clean electricity directly into the rail system and significantly reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
