::: should :::

1) 명령(order, command), 충고(advise), 제안(recommend, suggest, move, propose),

주장 (insist, urge), 요구(ask, demand, require, request), 결정(decide) 등의 동사(또는 그 동사들의

명사형이나 형용사형)that절을 목적어로 갖는 경우, that절에 should가 온다. 미국영어에서는

생략하고 동사 원형을 쓴다.

ex) I insist that you be ready.

   He rejected my suggestion that we appoint Roger.

  She was insistent that they all should meet for dinner.

cf) There was nothing to suggest that she intended to kill herself. (암시하다)

2) 필요나 의무 등을 나타내는 형용사 (necessary, imperative, essential, important, urgent, vital,

natural, impossible, advisable, desirable) 등이 절과 쓰일 경우 should가 오거나 생략한다.

ex) It is urgent that the police be notified about those strange phone calls.

 

 

 

 

::: wish :::

wish는 목적어인 that절에 가정법 과거나 과거완료를 써 현재나 과거에 실제로 이루어질 수 없는

일에 대한 희망을 나타낸다.

ex) I wish I were sitting at home.

  (= I'm sorry that I am not sitting at home.)

  I wish I had been sitting at home.

  (= I'm sorry that I was not sitting at home.)

  I wished I were sitting at home.

  (= I regretted I was not sitting at home.)

  I wished I had been sitting at home.

  (= I regretted I had not been sitting at home.)

주의 !!!

(a) wouldcould를 써서 요청이나 의뢰를 나타낼 수 있다.

ex) I wish someone would make me a cup of tea.

   (누군가가 나에게 차 한잔 타주면 좋겠다.)

(b) 실제로 이룰 수 있는 희망은 hope을 쓴다.

ex) I hope I'm not disturbing you.

 

::: as if, it is time :::

1) as if :

현재 또는 과거사실에 대하여 가정하고자 할 때 가정법 과거나 과거완료를 쓴다.

as though도 같은 뜻으로 쓰일 수 있지. 다소 문어적인 표현이다.

ex) She talks as if she knew a great deal about it.

   Everything looked strange to John as if he had not seen it before.

주의 !!!

(a) 현재 사실이 불확실한 경우에 가정법 현재를 쓸 수 있다.

ex) He speaks English as if he is an American.

   (그가 미국인인지 아닌지 모르겠지만 영어를 잘 구사한다.)

(b) as if(though)에 가정법 동사가 오면 like로 바꿀 수 있다.

ex) She talked like my mother.(=as if she were my mother)

2) it is time that :

"바야흐로 할 시간이다"의 뜻으로 가정법 과거 동사와 쓰여, 현재나 미래를 나타낸다. 또한,

that을 종종 생략하기도 한다. 이 표현은 상대방이 마땅히 해야할 일을 현재 아직 하지 않고 있을 때

흔히 쓰인다. ex) It's time you went to bed.

 

주의 !!!

강조하기 위해서 high time, about time으로 할 수 있다.

ex) It's high/about time you went home

::: if 생략, 주절 생략 :::

1) if의 생략 :

if절에서 if를 생략하고 주어와 동시의 순서가 바뀐다.

ex) Were he to come, I should refuse to see him.

  (=If he were to come, I should refuse to see him.)

  Had I had any money, I would have bought the car.

  (=If I had had any money, I would have bought the car.)

주의 !!!

(a) if절에 was가 쓰인 경우와 가정법 현재는 if를 생략할 수 없다.

ex) Don't you leave now, I will call the police.( X )

  → If you don't leave now, I will call the police.

  Was it to rain tomorrow, the match would be postponed.( X )

  → Were it to rain tomorrow, the match would be postponed.

b) if절이 부정문일 경우, if를 생략하여 주어 동사가 도치된다 하더라도 부정어는 문장 앞으로 도치되지 않는다.

ex) Hadn't it rained yesterday, I would have called on you.( X )

  → Had it not rained yesterday, I would have called on you.

2) 주절의 생략 :

if절이 남고 주절이 생략되어 강한 소망/후회/분노를 의미한다.

ex) If only I had seen the film. (= I wish that I had seen the film.)

  If only I had listened to my parents!

  (= I wish that I had listened to my parents.)

::: 관용적 용법 :::

1) if it were not for

"이 없다면"의 뜻으로 가정법 과거로 쓰이며, but for, without 등도 같은 표현이다.

if it had not been for는 가정법 과거완료로 쓰인다.

ex) If it were not for my family, I would give up my job.

  If it had not been for his laziness, he could have been rich.

2) I wish의 동의어

I would rather, I would sooner, I had rather, I had sooner, I would as soon, I had as soon, would that 등이 있다.

ex) I'd rather you didn't smoke in our room.

  I would just as soon you didn't drive the car while I'm gone.

  Would that we had seen her before she died.

3) what if

: "하면 어찌될 것인가?, 한들 상관없지 않은가?"의 뜻이다.

ex) What (will happen to us) if we get burgled we're on holiday?

  (우리가 휴가 중에 강도를 당하면 어떻게 될까?)

4) but (that), save (that), except (that) 등은 가정법 동사와 쓰여 if not을 대신할 수 있다.

* S+가정법 과거동사, but/except/save (that)+S+직설법 현재동사

* S+가정법 과거완료, but/except/save (that)+S+직설법 과거동사

ex) She would gain weight, but (that) she doesn't eat much.

  (=If she ate much, she would gain weight.)

  He would have helped us except (that) he didn't have time.

  (=If he had had time, he would have helped us.)

5) 기타 if 대용어

: provided/providing(=if only, on the condition that), so/as long as(=if only), suppose/supposing(=if), granting/granted(=even though), in case that(=if)

ex) You can borrow the car, providing you get it back to me before 10:00.

  So long as it doesn't rain I can climb the mountain.

  It's not worth the risk, suppose your mother found out.

고득점 문법

1) 명령법

(1) 명령문의 부정 : 주어가 2인칭인 것은 󰡒don't I"로 하고, 주어가 1,3 인칭인 경우 󰡓don't let"도는 󰡒let + 목적어 + not + 동사원형󰡓으로 한다.

ex) Don't let us close the door = Let us not close the door.

주의

(a) 명령문을 강조하기 위해서 do를 동사 앞에 놓는다.

ex) Do sit down!

(b) 명령문에 you를 그대로 두면 분노나 짜증을 나타낸다.

ex) You take your hands off me! (나에게서 손떼!)

(2) 관용적 표현

(a) 명령동사 + 의문사 + 주어 + 조동사 : 󰡒아무리 한다 하더라도󰡓의 뜻이다.

ex) Say what he will , she's a good mother.

  (=Whatever he will say = let him say what he will)

   Come what may , I am prepared for it.

  (=Whatever may come)

(b) Be + S + ever so + 형용사 : 아무리 할지라도

(c) 명령동사 + as + 주어 + 조동사 : 아무리 할지라도

(d) Be that as it may : 하여간 (=Be the matter what it may)

(e) 명령동사 + as + much + as + 주어 + 동사 : 아무리 한다 하더라도

(f) Be + S + A or B(주격보어) : A이든 B든간에

2) 가정법 과거 : 구어체에서 if절에 be동사는 were 대신 was를 쓰기도 한다. 그러나 미국 영어에서는 틀린 것으로 간주된다.

ex) If it was to rain tomorrow, the match would be postponed.

3) 혼합시제: if절의 시제가 가정법 과거 완료일 때 주절의 시제를 가정법 현재로 하지않는다. 그의 반대 경우도 마찬가지다.

ex) If had taken the doctor's advice, he may still be alive. ( X )

  → If had taken the doctor's advice, he might still be alive.

  If he is ill, we should have heard be now. ( X )

   → If he were ill, we should have heard by now.

4) should : 감정을 나타내는 형용사인 sorry, strange, (un)happy, sad 등이 that 절과 쓰일 경우 should가 오지만, 감정이 들어가지 않으면 직설법 동사가 쓰인다.

ex) It is strange that she should make such a mistake.

  (예상치 못한 실수를 한 것에 대해서 놀라움을 표시함)

cf) It's strange that you have never met him.

5) it's time

(1) should가 쓰이면 의무나 필요를 나타낼 수 있다.

ex) font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> It's time you sould finish the work.

(2) thatto 부정사로 바꿀 수 있다.

ex) It's time for you to go to home. (= It's time you went home)

6) if절 전체의 생략 : if 절의 뜻이 어느 단어(명사, 형용사, 부사, 동사)나 구(to 부정사, 분사, 동명사)에 숨어 있는 경우도 있다.

ex) A true friend would have acted differently.

  (= If he had been a true friend, he would have acted differently)

   Without him , I should be helpless. (= If it were not for him)

  It wouldn't be a good idea for you to see a doctor right away.

  (= if you saw a doctor right away)

   Beginning the work at once, they will finish it in time.

  (= If they begin the work at once)

::: 개념 :::

등위접속사인 and, but, or, for, as well as, nor 등은 같은 문법 구조의 단어, , , 문장 등을 연결한다.

ex) Do you want a pen and a bit of paper? (명사 연결)

  I like the tea nice and hot. (형용사 연결)

  The kite flew up higher and higher. (부사 연결)

  He works not in London but in New York. (부사구 연결)

  He knocked on the door and went in. (동사 연결)

  His alternative is to stand or to run. (to부정사 연결)

  She enjoys eating and drinking. (동명사 연결)

  You need to know what rights you have and how you use them. (명사절 연결)

  I missed supper and I'm starving. (문장 연결)

::: But, yet :::

1) but: 단어, , , 문장을 연결하여 반대 또는 대조의 뜻을 갖는다.

ex) The car is very cheap, but it is extremely liable.

  (그 자동차는 매우 싸지만 극히 믿을 만하다.)

2) yet: "그럼에도(불구하고)"의 양보의 뜻을 갖는다.

ex) She is a weird girl, yet you can't help liking her.

  (그녀는 별스런 소녀지만 그녀를 좋아하지 않을 수 없다.)

주의 : yet은 문장과 문장을 연결할 때 and와 함께 쓰이거나, 단독으로 쓰일 수 있다.

단어와 단어를 연결할 경우는 and를 동반하지 않는다.

ex) It's only a little shop, (and) yet it always has such lovely decorations.

  (그 상점은 작지만 아주 아름다운 장식품을 갖고 있다.)

::: Or, nor :::

1) or: '또는'의 선택을 나타낸다.

ex) Is it green or blue?

주의 : 'or'""의 뜻으로 동격을 유도하기도 한다. 앞의 낱말, , 절에 대하여 환언, 보충 설명하는 역할을 한다.

ex) She was born in Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City as it is now called.

  (그녀는 현재 호치민 시라고 불려지는 사이공에서 출생했다.)

2) nor: and notor not의 약형이다. 앞의 부정문을 받아서 "하지 않다"의 뜻으로 쓰인다. nor가 문장 앞에 오면, 주어와 동사가 바뀐다.

ex) This is not main reason, nor is it the most important.

::: For :::

앞 문장에 대한 추가적 설명이나 주관적 판단으로 이유나 붙이거나 정당화를 위해서 쓰인다. because는 주절에 대한 직접적 원인을 나타낸다.

ex) He found it increasingly difficult to read, for his eyes were failing.

  (because를 쓰지 못함)

  I believed her, for surely she would not lie to me. (because로 대신할 수 있음)

주의 : for는 접속사로서 문장 앞에 올 수가 없다.

ex) For I like it, I do it.(x) Because I like it, I do it.

::: Not-but, not :::

1) not but: not A but B"A가 아니라 B이다"의 뜻이다.

ex) He is not my friend but my brother.

cf) He doesn't like music but his wife does.(not but의 구문이 아님)

주의 : not A but B가 주어에 오는 경우 B에 수를 일치시킨다.

ex) Not you but I am responsible for the work.

2) not: 앞 문장과 중복되는 부분을 생략하고 남은 "and not"에서 and를 생략하여 "A, not B"(=not B but A)으로 쓰여 등위접속사 역할을 한다.

ex) The book is mine and it isn't yours.

  → The book is mine and not yours.

  → The book is mine, not yours. = The book is not yours but mine.

::: Not only - but also :::

접속사는 같은 문법적 구조의 단어, , 절 등을 연결한다.

1) not only가 문장 앞에 오면 주어와 동사가 바뀐다.

ex) Not only do I like flying but also like traveling by train.

2) also를 생략할 수 있다.

ex) He called out not only to me but (also) to my wife.

  = He called out not only to me but to my wife as well.

3) but을 생략하고 semicolon(;)을 쓸 수 있다.

ex) Not only did he hear it; he also saw it.

4) only 대신에 merely, simply 또는 just를 쓸 수 있다.

ex) It is not merely beautiful but also useful.

::: Both-and, neither-nor, either-or :::

1) both and: 두 개의 문법적으로 같은 단어, , , 문장을 연결한다.

ex) She is both intelligent and tall and beautiful. (x)

  → She is intelligent, tall, and beautiful.

2) either or, neither nor: eitheror, 그리고 neithernor와 쓰여서 문법적으로 같은 구조의 낱말, , 절을 연결한다.

ex) You must be either for the plan or against the plan.

  He neither spoke nor even wrote to us again.

주의 : either A or Bneither A nor BB에 수를 일치시킨다.

ex) Either Tom or you have my money. (you에 동사를 일치시킴)

  Neither Linda nor I have the ticket. (I에 동사를 일치시킴)
