::: 재귀대명사 :::

재귀대명사에는 강조 용법과 재귀적 용법이 있다.

1) 종류

단수 복수

1인칭 myself ourselves

2인칭 yourself yourselves

3인칭 himself, herself themselves

2) 재귀적 용법

행위를 일으킨 사람 자신에게 행위가 다시 돌아오면서 주어와 타동사의 목적어가 같을 때 쓰인다.

ex) History repeats itself. (역사는 반복된다.)

3) 강조 용법

()명사를 뒤에서 동격으로 강조한다. 재귀대명사 위치는 자유로우며 생략할 수 있다.

ex) I myself have never met him before.

  = I have never myself met him before.

  = I have never met him before myself.

::: Some, any :::

대명사, 형용사, 부사로 쓰인다. some은 긍정문에, any는 부정문과 의문문에 쓰인다.

1) 대명사 : 단독으로 사용되거나 of와 함께 다음과 같이 쓰인다.

some of the/these/those/소유격 + 가산 복수명사 = 복수 취급

any of the/this/that/소유격 + 불가산 단수명사 = 단수 취급

ex) Some of these cups are broken.

  Some of the work is difficult.

2) 형용사 : 관사, 지시형용사 (that/this/these/those/such), 수사(one, two), 부정형용사(every/each/all) 등과 함께 명사를 수식할 수 없다.

ex) I need the some books. (×)

  → I need some of the books.

3) 부사 : 일반 부사처럼 동사, 형용사, 부사를 수식할 수 없지만 수사 앞에서 쓰여 "" (=about)의 뜻으로 쓰인다.

ex) Some/About 300 people were present. [=300 people or so (300)]

주의 !! any가 긍정문에 쓰이면 양보(일지라도, 이든)의 뜻을 갖는다.

ex) Take any book you like. (어떤 책이든)

::: No, none :::

1) no : "not + a" 또는 "not + any(형용사/부사)"의 뜻으로 명사를 수식하는 형용사나 비교급을 수식하는 부사로 쓰인다.

ex) No students are to leave the room.

  This book is no more exciting than his others. (비교급 강조)

2) none : "not + one" 또는 "not + any(대명사)"의 뜻을 가진 대명사이다. 따라서 명사를 수식할 수 없다.

ex) I have none money. (×) I have no money.

주의 !!

(a) "none of + 단수"는 단수 취급, "none of + 복수"는 복수 취급한다.

, 미국 구어에서는 "none of + 복수"를 단수 취급하기도 한다.

ex) None of the boys is / are absent.

(b) the+비교급, too, so 등을 수식하는 부사로 쓰일 수 있다.

ex) She's none too well this morning. (그녀는 오늘 아침 아주 건강하진 않다.)

::: One :::

1) 명사 : ", 사람(=person)"이라는 뜻일 때는 "하나"라는 수사가 아니기 때문에 명사를 수식할 수 없다. 이 경우 단독으로 쓰일 수 없어서 a, no, the, this, any, some, every, each, many, no 등의 수식을 받거나 ones로 쓰인다.

ex) I prefer that one. (저것)

  She is the only one who tried to help me. (=person)

2) 대명사 : "모든 사람을 총칭(=you)"하거나 "하나 (사람, 사물)"를 의미한다. 명사를 수식할 수 없어서 단독으로 쓰인다. 사람을 총칭할 때의 복수는 people이나 they로 한다. "하나"의 뜻일 경우는 one을 쓴다. one of 다음에는 복수가 온다.

ex) One of my friends lives in Seoul. Some of my friends live in Seoul.

  One should always do his best. (you로 바꿀 수 있음.)

  Can you lend me one? (하나)

3) 형용사 : "하나의"라는 수사로 명사를 수식한다.

ex) There is only one piece of cake left.

::: Other :::

대명사, 형용사로 쓰인다. 단독으로 쓰일 수 없기 때문에 관사와 함께 쓰이거나 복수형으로 쓰이거나 또는 명사를 수식한다.

ex) Are there other questions?

  I went swimming but the others played tennis.

주의 !! anotheranother가 복합된 것으로 다음과 같이 쓰인다.

(a) 대명사로 쓰이거나 단수가산명사를 수식한다.

ex) Would you like another cup of tea?

(b) 복수명사를 수식할 수 없으나, "숫자 + 복수명사"일 경우에는 가능하다.

ex) She's got another books. (×)

  → She's got another book.

  In another three weeks, it'll be finished. (3주 더)

(c) "하나 더"(one more) , "다른"(different) 등의 뜻으로 쓰인다.

ex) Let's have another cup of coffee? (하나 더)

  That is another question. (다른 문제)

::: All :::

all은 명사, 대명사, 형용사, 부사로 쓰인다.

1) 명사

단독으로 쓰이며, 사람을 의미하면 복수 취급하고 사물인 경우 단수취급한다.

ex) All were silent. (모두가 침묵했다.)

  All was silent. (만물이 고요했다.)

2) 대명사

of와 함께 쓰이면 of 다음에 the/this/that/these/those/소유격 등이 온다.

all of 다음에 복수명사가 오면 복수 취급, 단수명사가 오면 단수 취급한다.

종종 of를 생략하지만, of 다음에 대명사일 때에는 생략할 수 없다.

ex) All of the books are mine.

  All of the milk is spilt. (우유 전부가 엎질러졌다.)

  All (of) the boys. All them (×) All of them

3) 형용사

복수명사(가산명사인 경우)와 단수명사(불가산명사인 경우)를 수식한다.

ex) You can get all kinds of food there. (거기서 모든 종류의 식품을 살 수 있다.)

  All violence is avoidable. (모든 폭력은 피할 수 있다.)

::: Every :::

셋 이상에 쓰이며, 각자를 강조하여 전체를 나타내기 때문에 all과는 달리 단수 취급된다. 단독으로 쓰일 수 없고 단수가산명사를 수식하는 형용사로서만 쓰인다. "숫자 + 복수명사"를 수식할 수 있다.

ex) Every students have to fill in a questionnaire. (×)

  → Every student has to fill in a questionnaire.

  (모든 학생들은 그 질문서에 필요한 사항을 기입해야 한다.)

  → You should change the oil every 5,000 miles.

주의 !! 시간명사와 함께 쓰일 경우 전치사 없이 관용적으로 쓰인다.

every day = daily every week = weekly every month = monthly every year = yearly every quarter = quarterly every second day = every other day = every two days (격일로) every three days = every third day (3일마다)

::: Each :::

둘 이상을 나타내며, 대명사, 형용사, 부사로 쓰인다.

1) 대명사 : 단독으로 쓰이거나 of와 함께 쓰인다. 단수 취급된다.

* each of + the/these/those/소유격 + 복수명사 = 단수취급

ex) Each of the children goes to a different school.

2) 형용사

단수가산명사를 수식하며, 관사/지시형용사/소유격과 함께 명사를 수식할 수 없다.

ex) Each children were given a gift. (×)

  → Each child was given a gift.

  Each the item is carefully checked. (×)

  → Each item is carefully checked.

3) 부사

()명사와 뒤에서 의미상으로 동격을 이룬다. 이 경우에는 ()명사에 수와 인칭을 일치 시킨다.

ex) My wife and I each have our own bank accounts.

  They cost one dollar each. (eachthey와 동격)

  Each of them costs one dollar.

::: Both :::

둘 중 모두를 의미하며 대명사, 형용사, 부사로 쓰인다.

1) 대명사

단독으로 사용되거나 다음과 같이 of와 함께 쓰인다. both of + the / these / those /소유격 + 복수명사 = 복수 취급, both of + 복수대명사 = 복수 취급

ex) Both of the companies were established two years ago.

2) 형용사

복수명사를 수식한다.

ex) Both Helen's parent are doctors. (×)

  → Both Helen's parents are doctors.

3) 부사

(1) and와 함께 쓰여서 항상 두 개의 단어, , 절을 연결할 수 있다.

ex) He visited both London and New York.

(2) ()명사 뒤에서 동격으로 쓰인다.

ex) They both(= Both of them) started speaking together.

::: Either, neither :::

대명사, 형용사, 부사, 접속사로 쓰인다. either는 둘 중에 어느 하나, 그리고 neither(= not + either)는 둘 모두 다 아닌 것을 의미한다.

1) 대명사

단독으로 쓰이거나 of와 함께 쓰인다. either of + the/these/those/소유격 + 복수명사 = 단수 취급

ex) Either of the two is acceptable to me.

2) 형용사

단수가산명사를 수식한다. 관사와 함께 쓰일 수 없다.

ex) Neither window faces the sea.

3) 부사

부정문에서 "역시 이 아니다"의 뜻으로 쓰인다.

ex) A: Bob can't drive.

  B: John can't either. 또는 Neither can John.

4) 접속사

eitheror, neithernor와 함께 상관등위접속사로 쓰인다. either A or BB에 수와 인칭을 일치시킨다. Neither A nor BB에 수와 인칭을 일치시킨다.

ex) Neither Linda nor her mother has tickets.

::: Most :::

대명사, 형용사, 부사 등으로 쓰인다.

1) 대명사

단독으로 쓰이거나, of와 함께 쓰여 "대부분"의 뜻을 갖는다.

most of + the / these / those /소유격+복수명사 = 복수 취급

most of + the / this / that /소유격+단수 불가산명사 = 단수 취급

ex) Most of Americans have cars. (×)

  → Most of the Americans have cars.

2) 형용사

manymuch의 최상급이다.

(1) the most + 명사 : "가장 많은"이라는 뜻이다.

ex) the most water (가장 많은 양의 물), the most cars (가장 많은 자동차)

(2) the most + 형용사 + 명사 : "가장 "이라는 뜻의 최상급이다.

ex) the most important book (가장 중요한 책)

cf) the largest book (가장 큰 책)

(3) most + 명사 : "대부분의"라는 뜻의 부정형용사이다.

ex) most people (대부분의 사람들)

::: 개념 :::

명사를 수식하거나 보어로 쓰여 명사를 보충 설명한다. 종류로는 성상형용사(성질, 상태를 나타냄.), 수량형용사(, , 정도를 나타냄.), 그리고 지시형용사(대명사에서 나온 것) 등이 있다.

ex) Sad hours seem long. The two houses are beautiful.

주의 : 형용사는 지시대명사(this, that, these, those, such), 인칭대명사(I, we, you, he, she, they), 다른 형용사, 부사, 동사, 전치사, 부사절 등을 수식할 수 없다.

ex) After a long delay, the performance final started. (×)

  → After a long delay, the performance finally started.

  Her illness was caused main by work and stress. (×)

  → Her illness was caused mainly by work and stress.

::: 한정적용법,서술적용법 :::

명사를 직접 수식하는 형용사를 한정적 용법, 그리고 간접적으로 수식하여 주격보어나 목적격보어로 쓰이는 것을 서술적 용법이라 한다. 대부분의 형용사는 두 가지 용법으로 쓰인다.

ex) He bought light summer clothes. (한정적 용법)

  This coat is light but very warm. (서술적 용법)

1) 한정적으로만 쓰이는 형용사 : live, spare, right, left, mere, wooden, outer, inner, former, elder, lone

2) 서술적으로만 쓰이는 형용사 : 다음은 명사를 뒤에서 수식하거나 보어로 쓰인다.

(1) a로 시작되는 형용사 : afraid, alone, asleep, alive, alike, aware, ashamed, absent, ablaze, averse, apart, afloat, akin

(2) content, worth, opposite, subject, unable, glad, pleased, sorry, upset, liable, won, (un)well

::: Worth :::

1) worth : 서술 형용사로 "의 가치가 있는, 의 값어치가 있는, 할 만한 가치가 있는"의 뜻을 갖는다.

단독으로 쓰이지 못하고 다음과 같이 쓰인다.

ex) There is nothing (that is) worth reading in this magazine.

주의 !! 항상 worth는 명사, 대명사, 능동형 동명사를 취해야 한다.

ex) The printer isn't worth being repaired. (×)

  → The printer isn't worth repairing.

2) worthy : "가치가 있는, 어울리는"의 뜻으로 동명사나 ()명사를 취할 경우 of가 와야 한다. worthy 다음에 to부정사가 올 수 있다.

ex) The plan is worthy of our contempt.

  She was worthy to accept the prize.

3) worthwhile : 이미 투입한 노력, 돈 또는 시간이 가치가 있다는 뜻을 말한다.

ex) It is worthwhile to read(또는 reading) this book.

::: Like, alike, as :::

like는 전치사, alike는 서술형용사, as는 접속사와 전치사, 부사로 쓰일 수 있다.

1) like : "같은, 처럼"의 뜻을 갖는 전치사로 사용되기 때문에 ()명사, 동명사를 목적어로 한다. , 구어체에서는 접속사로 쓰이기도 한다. like의 부정은 unlike이다.

ex) My mother has a car like yours.

  She acts like (=as if) she has the building. (구어체)

2) as : 전치사, 접속사, 부사로 쓰일 수 있다.

(1) 전치사 : "로서"의 뜻으로 자격이나 대역의 뜻을 갖는다.

ex) He works as a teacher. (선생으로) (He=teacher)

  He ordered us like a teacher. (Heteacher)

(2) 접속사 : "처럼, 같이, 한 대로"의 뜻으로 쓰인다.

ex) Do as I say and sit down. / Leave the table as it is. (있는 그대로)

::: 주의해야 할 형용사 :::

다음은 자주 출제되는 혼동하기 쉬운 것들이므로 암기해야 한다.

desirous (바라는) desirable (바람직한)

credulous (남을 믿는) credible (믿을 만한)

sensitive (민감한), sensible (느낄 수 있는, 분별 있는)

sensual (관능적인, 육체적인), sensuous (감각적인)

imaginable (상상할 수 있는) imaginary (가상의) imaginative(상상력이 풍부한)

luxuriant (기름진) luxurious (사치스러운)

economic (경제의, 경제학의) economical (경제적인, 절약하는)

industrial (산업의) industrious (근면한)

healthful (건강에 좋은) healthy (건강한)

considerate (사려 깊은) considerable (상당한)

respectable (존경받을 만한) respectful (존경스러운) respective (각각의)

ex) The house has many desirable features.

  (그 집은 많은 바람직한 특징을 갖고 있다.)

  He is desirous of getting his name in the papers.

  (그는 신문에 그의 이름이 나길 바란다.)

::: 기타 :::

1) 다음은 자주 출제되므로 암기해야 한다.

be critical of (비난하다) be critical to (하다)

be clear of (치우다) be exclusive of (제외하다)

be aware of (알다) be good at (능숙하다)

be good for (유익하다) be dependent on (의존하다)

be afraid of (두려워하다, 걱정하다) be characteristic of (특징이다)

be present at (참석하다) be concerned with (관계하다)

be concerned about (염려하다) be conscious of (의식하다)

be familiar with/to (익숙하다) opposite to (정반대의)

be present in (존재하다) be rich/abundant in (=be full of : 풍부하다)

be adjacent to (인접하다) be subject to (복종하다, 하기 쉽다, 해야 한다)

be convinced of (확신하다) be sensitive to (민감하다)

be equivalent to (동등하다) be pertinent (관련되다)

be ignorant of (무지하다) be sure of (확신하다)

be popular with (인기가 있다) be enthusiastic about (열정적이다)

ex) By now you will be familiar with the layout of the house.

cf) The facts are familiar to every schoolboy.

2) 다음은 자주 출제되는 것으로서 암기해야 한다.

contrary to (반대되는) be related to (관계되다, 친척이다)

be anxious about (염려하다) be anxious for (몹시 갈망하다)

be true of (해당되다) be true to (성실하다, 그대로이다)

be qualified for (자격이 있다) be equal to (같다) be capable of (할 수 있다)

be resistant to (저항하다) be free of (자유로이 하다)

be independent of (독립해 있다) be tolerant (묵인하다)

be suspicious of (의심하다) be weary of (싫증을 느끼다)

be weary with (지치다) be fed up with (싫증나다)

be content with (만족하다) be ashamed of (부끄러워하다)

be devoid of (전혀 없다) be indifferent to (무관심하다)

be intent on (전념하다, 열망하다) be different from (다르다)

be quick/slow at (에 빠르다/느리다) be efficient for (유용하다)

be beneficient to (유익하다) be open to (개방되다, 을 받기 쉽다, 기분 좋게 받아들이다)

ex) The argument is devoid of logic. (그 주장은 논리성이 결여되어 있다.)

  They began building on the land adjacent to the river.

고득점 문법

1) 한정적 용법

(1) 다음과 같은 경우에 형용사가 뒤에서 명사를 수식할 수 있다.

(a) -thing, -body, -one, -where 등을 갖는 단어를 수식할 때

ex) I want something special. (특별한 것)

(b) 형용사가 전치사구의 수식을 받을 때

ex) This is a book different from what I bought.

(c) 강조, 대조, 리듬(rhythm), 등을 의미하는 형용사가 두 개 이상 연결된 경우

ex) She is a woman cute and creative.

(d) 동사의 성질이 강한 형용사

ex) The affair is greatly regretted by everyone concerned. (관계되는)

(e) 등위 접속사로 두 개 이상 연결된 형용사는 앞뒤에서 수식할 수 있다.

ex) The manager, kind but strict, likes swimming.

  = The kind but strict manager likes swimming.

(f) 관용어 및 프랑스어나 라틴어 어순에 따른 것 : poet laureate(계관시인), the president elect(대통령 당선자), from(since) time immemorial(태고이래), court martial(군법회의), general(총독) (관직 뒤에 쓰여 "-. 장관"의 뜻임), secretary general(사무총장), Attorney General(법무장관), God Almighty(전능의 신), time immemorial(태고의), the sum total(총액), the heir apparent(법정추정 상속인), Asia Minor(소아시아), France proper(프랑스 본토), music proper(음악 그 자체), the blood(birth) royal(왕족[]), things Korean(한국의 풍물)

(2) 한정적으로 쓰인 형용사는 부사로 번역할 경우도 있다.

ex) He is an occasional guest = He is a guest who occasionally visits.

(3) 한정적으로 쓰일 대와 서술적으로 쓰일 때 의미가 다른 형용사 : certain(어떤 - 확실한), able(능력 있는 - 할 수 있는), late(죽은 - 늦은), present(현재의 - 존재하는, 출석한), responsible(신뢰할 수 있는 - 책임 있는)

ex) She is content with her present salary. (현재의)

  A lot of people were present at the meeting. (출석한)

2) 서술적 용법

(1) 부사의 수식을 받으면 명사를 앞에서 수식할 수 있다.

ex) the wide awake children

(2) available은 한정용법과 서술용법으로 쓰일 수 있다.

ex) The only available tickets are very expensive.

  The only tickets (that are) available are expensive.

3) worth

(1) 명사 : "가치(=value), 의 값만큼의 분량(=amount), 어치, 중요성(=importance)"의 뜻이다.

ex) The storm did thousands of pounds' worth of damage.

(2) worth는 가주어 it을 쓰거나 대신에 동명사의 목적어를 주어로 쓸 수 있다.

ex) It is not worth fighting for the country.

  The country is not worth fight for.

4) 혼동하기 쉬운 형용사 : beneficial(유익한), beneficent(자비로운), literal(문자의), literary(문학적인), literate(학식 있는, 교양 있는), successful(성공적인), successive(연속의), negligent(소홀히 하는), negligible(무시할 만한), envious(부러워하는), enviable(부러워 할 만한), continuable(계속할 수 있는), momentary(순간의), momentous(중대한), popular(인기 있는, 대중적인), populous(사람이 많은), urban(도시의), urbane(세련된), practicable(실행할 수 있는), practical(실제적인), contemptible(멸시받을 만한), contemptuous(멸시하는)

5) 형용사의 순서

(1) 명사를 앞에서 수식하는 형용사의 순서

* both/all/half + 소유격/관사 + 지시형용사 + 수량(서수 +기수) + /+ 형상 + + /+ 고유명사 + 명사

ex) the five large blue shoes, his first good look

주의 : 순서는 절대적인 것이 아니다. 짧은 것을 긴 것 앞에 놓을 수도 있다.

ex) a bright cheerful smile

(2) 형용사와 등위접속사(and, but)

(a) 형용사가 다른 부분을 나타낼 때 and를 넣고, 대조를 이룰 때 but을 넣는다.

ex) a black white book (×) a black and white book

  a small but useful bag

(b) 형용사의 의미가 서로 다를 때 and를 넣지 않는다.

ex) It is a beautiful and golden flower (×)

  → It is a beautiful golden flower

6) to부정사를 보어로 취하는 형용사 : sure, apt, liable, likely, unlikely, prone, sorry, proud, glad, delighted, surprised, angry, upset, eager, keen, curious, quick, ready, reluctant, content, determined, inclined, competent, anxious, happy, good, astonished

ex) Some of the staff are apt to arrive late on Mondays.

  (직원들 중 몇 명은 월요일 날 늦게 도착하는 경향이 있다.)

7) that절을 보어로 취하는 형용사 : sure, happy, proud, sorry, glad, likely, certain, aware, convinced, delighted, confident, anxious, surprised, grateful, astonished, disappointed 등은 that절을 보어로 취한다. that은 생략할 수 있다.

ex) I'm happy (that) everything worked out in the end.

8) 사람을 주어로 하는 형용사 : able, sorry, glad, anxious, content, proud, willing, grateful, afraid, happy, thankful, determined, ashamed, eager, reluctant 등은 사람만 주어로 가질 수 있다.

ex) I'm thankful for your helping me.

9) 고유형용사 : 국적을 말할 경우는 형용사로 한다.

ex) A : "Where are you from?" B : "I'm American."

::: 원급비교 :::

원급비교는 "as + 형용사(부사) + as"의 형태로 나타내며, 앞에 있는 as는 부사이고 뒤에 있는 as는 앞에 있는 as를 수식하는 접속사이다.

ex) This apple is as sweet as that one.

  George has as much money as I have.

주의 !!

(a) 부정문에서 asassoas를 쓰지만 긍정문에서는 asas만 쓴다.

ex) He hit the ball so hard as she did. (×) He hit the ball as hard as she did.

  Jim is not as/so tall as Tom.

(b) John is as old as Tim is. = John is the same age as Tim.

"JohnTim만큼 늙었다"가 아니라 "JohnTim은 동갑이다"의 뜻이다.
