This image illustrates four different architectural strategies for daylighting, which is the practice of bringing natural light into a building's interior. Each method aims to maximize the penetration and distribution of sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lighting.
Daylighting Strategies
# 1. Atrium
An atrium is a large open space, often multi-story, located within a building.
* How it works: Sunlight (indicated by yellow rays) enters through a glass roof or skylight at the top of the atrium. The open vertical space allows natural light to penetrate deeply into the core of the building, illuminating multiple floors.
# 2. Light Duct
A light duct (or light tube/light pipe) is a passive device designed to transport daylight from the outdoors to interior spaces that do not have direct access to windows.
* How it works: Sunlight is captured by a collector (often with reflectors) at the roof level. The light then travels down a highly reflective shaft or duct, distributing illumination into rooms below or within the building's interior.
# 3. Clerestory
Clerestory windows are high windows placed above eye level, typically positioned above an adjacent roofline.
* How it works: Sunlight enters through the high-set glass windows, allowing light to penetrate deeper into the room than standard wall windows, particularly useful for illuminating the back of a space. The angled roof in the diagram suggests how these windows can be integrated into the roof structure.
# 4. Reflective Blinds
Reflective blinds are window treatments designed not just for privacy or shading, but also to redirect sunlight.
* How it works: Sunlight enters through a window and strikes specially designed reflective blinds. Instead of blocking the light entirely, these blinds bounce the light upwards onto the ceiling, which then diffuses it throughout the room, providing indirect and glare-free illumination deeper into the space.
These passive daylighting techniques contribute to energy efficiency by reducing electricity consumption for lighting, and they also enhance occupant comfort and well-being by providing natural light indoors.
